Gearing Up For Golf 2003 -
Nova Scotian Golfers In To Another Season - by Travelin' Tony Tee (Editor @ Large)

Travelling from Metro Halifax down the South Shore, or "Lighthouse Route" the first (and some say the best) course you hit is Chester Golf Club. This seaside track has long been a Nova Scotian favourite. Close to the city, but extremely scenic and accessible. Don't let the ocean views distract you though, Chester is a tester. Its tight, wooded layout, along with the aforementioned water, make a low score here a real achievement. You won't need to haul out the gold card either, as unlike the affluent community it resides in, Chester Golf Club is a bargain with $43.00 green fees ($25.00 9 Holes) tax in ! (902) 275-4543 for tee times.     Chester Golf Club - Chester, Nova Scotia - Signature Hole

Long known for its history, Lunenburg also boasts an excellent little gem of a golf experience. Named after its famous sailing namesake, Bluenose Golf Course is a 9 hole track that debuted a new no. 2 green last year. Business Manager Jamie Myra describes the layout as "hilly and challenging, forcing a lot of blind shots in to postage stamp size greens". Yeah ! All this can be yours for only $35.00 for 18 holes ($22.00 9 Holes) taxes included ! (902) 634-4260 is the Pro Shop.

Bridgewater is the largest community on the South Shore and a sort of golf hub these days with 2 courses. The "Olde Towne Golf Course", so named as it is the original track that has been in the area for years, has seen some sprucing up recently. Owner/manager Jerry Byers is looking forward to his second full season after "upgrading a bit, tee signage wise" and "generally sprucing up" these fun 9 holes, with a "view of the town". The layout also offers different views when playing your second 9, as the tees on 1 and 4 change slightly, giving a distinctively different feel to the holes. Green fees here are an excellent $26.00 for 18 holes ($18.00 9 Holes) tax in ! Call today @ (902) 527-6532.

Osprey Ridge - Bridgewater, Nova Scotia - Signature Hole

Now in its sixth season, Osprey Ridge Golf & Country Club in Bridgewater is shaping up to be a first class, high caliber facility that rivals some of the country's best. Their fine new clubhouse has rounded out the club's full experience. This makes Osprey Ridge an excellent spot for corporate tournaments. Course Manager Jamie Brown says this year "we will be offering special prices for group functions" Their regular prices are excellent with Green Fees of $46.00 ($28.75 after 3). Call (902) 543-6666 and get in a round at this blossoming track.

Moving down the 103 an hour and a half from Halifax, the Liverpool/White Point course is one of the few remaining full length 9 hole layouts left in the Province. Immaculately maintained for the locals and the guests of White Point Beach Resort (where's it's always a great day !), the Liverpool G&CC offers many challenges amid the wonderful ocean views. There is more water vistas in the future here as well, now that they have purchased a couple of parcels of land and have brought in renowned architect Graham Cooke to design the second 9. Course Pro Dave Kempshed says they are down to a couple of designs being study by a committee. If the necessary funds are found, look for an awesome complete 18 here by 2002. In the meantime Kempshed comments, "nothing much has changed since the course opened in 1930". And why mess with perfection ! A truly wonderful nine, worth playing twice. Green Fees for Resort guests are $32.00 for 18. Non guests pay $35.00. Toll free tee-offs @ 1-800-565-5068.

Just down the road a piece (as they say around here) is the highly talked about River Hills Golf Course. The former "Shelburne/Clyde River" Golf club opened its final 5 holes last September to glowing accolades. It has taken them a long time to finish the full 18 and it has been well worth the wait. A generous endowment of $200,000 from the will of a long time member and some Government funding helped them finish up the course. Shelburne Manager Dennis MacKenzie says this was no easy task as "around here it's pretty rocky country, not like Truro where you have to look around for a rock !" In the meantime treat yourself to the new layout and scenic locale. (18 holes for $24.00 Mon- Thu or $27.00 weekends). Phone (902) 637-2415.     Shelburne County Golf Club - Clyde River, Nova Scotia - Signature Hole

As we head down towards the end of the Lighthouse Route, drop by West Pubnico for a delightful stroll in the wilderness, complete with dear, rabbits, robins and other wildlife roaming the grounds. The babbling brooks that criss cross the course don't come in to play too often and even with the massive increase in golf interest in the area, West Pubnico is relatively crowd free. This year they show off their brand new Clubhouse, which was christened with a New Year's Eve dance! The weather in this part of the Province tends to provide for a lot less cloud cover, so the course opens early and is often sunny when much of the region isn't. Drop down and be pleasantly surprised, especially with the rates. Green fees are $31.05 weekends / $28.75 weekdays , with the tax. (902) 762 - 2007.

Our next feature will focus on the fine facilities available in the Halifax/Dartmouth Metro area, such as Grandview, Granite Springs, Hartlen Point, Glen Arbour and more. So bookmark our site and come back often for updates. Special thanks to the Nova Scotia Golf Association for certain photos, content and external links featured in this piece.
