The
Cape Breton Highlands Links combines breathtaking mountain and ocean
vistas within one of Eastern Canada's most beautiful National Parks
- Cape Breton Highlands.
Designed by Stanley
Thompson, the course is ranked number one in Canada and 75th in
the World by Golf Magazine and is consistently nominated as one
of Canada's best. Thompson who designed other notable courses such as
St. George's in Toronto, and Banff and Jasper in Alberta created a masterpiece
in the rugged terrain of Cape Breton on the world-renowned Cabot
Trail, the Highlands Links in Ingonish.

The
Cape Breton Highlands Links features a course that is not overpowering
for the average golfer, but a challenging layout that requires accuracy
off the tees, rolling fairways that feature very few flat lies, if any
and relatively small, undulating greens that reward a good shot. The
greens are predominantly Penncross grass with some Poa annua and average
about 4,500 square feet in size, small by today's standards. The tee
and fairways are sown with Kentucky Bluegrass.
The
Scottish links similarities are most obvious at every tee area as
each hole bears a Scottish name. The first hole is called Ben Franey,
because of the view of Franey Mountain. Heich O'Fash or Heap of Trouble
describes the short Par 4, fourth hole while Killiecrankie, describes
the long and narrow Par 5, seventh hole. Other sign posts at the tees
portray colourful names as Cuddy's Lugs (Donkey's Ears), Tattie Bogle
(Potato Pits) and Hame Noo (Home Now) on the l8th.
The
serenity, natural beauty and peace of the region lull all of those
fortunate enough to play and experience this course. As many have said,
your score is almost an afterthought on this magnificent layout.
